Bernardo lives in São Paulo. He collects wood and sells it. He has no passport or any other identification documents so he is not allowed to go onto the top of the Banespa-Building, a high skyscraper; because you need a passport and you have to sign in when you enter. Tourists are allowed to enter this building. From the top of the Banespa-Building there is a fantastic view over the city.

The installation * to bernardo to são paulo / / shows this view, this endless sea of buildings up to the horizon. Forty silkscreen prints on car windscreens show the skyline of São Paulo. They lie like waves over flickering fluorescent tubes.

Visitors to the installation are able to walk over a jetty through the windscreens to read an interview with Bernardo and photographs showing him with his dog can be seen on a fluorescent screen.
The viewer is now at the same eye-level as the photographic image of Bernardo. Both look over the windscreens and the panoramic view from the Banespa-Building.

* to bernardo to são paulo / / was shown in the exhibition "Walking on Art" Arts Society Ludwigsburg, Germany 2003, curated by Agnes Kohlmeyer.

Stefan Baumberger with the help of Michel'Angelo Ziccarelli and Nicole Heidtke, 2003
